Term 1
Science - Electricity
Pupils will develop their understanding of electricity by identifying and using different circuit components. They will learn to draw and label circuit diagrams using recognised symbols, before building and testing their own circuits. Pupils will investigate how changing variables affects a circuit, making predictions, carrying out practical tests and using their findings to draw conclusions.
Geography - Mapping and Location - OS Maps
Pupils will develop their mapping skills by using Ordnance Survey maps, grid references, symbols, scale and contour lines. They will explore the UK and Europe, locating countries, borders and key physical features, and will develop their understanding of topography. Pupils will also investigate the world’s climate zones and significant geographical features, including the Mariana Trench.
WRITING - Floodland
Inspired by Marcus Sedgwick’s Floodland, pupils will explore Eels Island, its harsh inhabitants and its leader, Dooby, through the experiences of Zoe, who finds herself stranded there. They will develop their writing through character descriptions and narrative, using dialogue, description and action to reveal character, build atmosphere and move the story forward.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - Creation and Covenant
Pupils will explore the Christian beliefs of Creation and Covenant through the story of the Garden of Eden and the Fall. They will consider ideas of creation, human choice, sin and forgiveness, before exploring the significance of Baptism and how it represents a new beginning and a relationship with God.
ICT - Codebreaking
Pupils will explore the fascinating world of codes and ciphers, learning about the Enigma machine and its role in history. They will develop their computational thinking by creating, deciphering and testing codes, using logical reasoning and pattern recognition to solve a range of code-breaking challenges.
MATHS - Number
Pupils will develop their understanding of place value and use this knowledge to solve increasingly complex problems. They will build fluency in the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division – using efficient written methods. This will include long multiplication and both short and long division, with pupils applying their skills to a range of calculations and problem-solving contexts.
ART - Painting
Pupils will explore the work of J.M.W. Turner, considering how he used colour, light and atmosphere to create dramatic landscapes. They will develop their painting skills by experimenting with colour mixing, brushwork and different techniques, before applying their learning to create their own Turner-inspired artwork.
PE - Netball
Pupils will develop their netball skills, including passing, catching, footwork, shooting and marking. They will apply these skills in game situations, developing their understanding of positioning, teamwork and tactics. Pupils will learn to make effective decisions, communicate with teammates and play confidently and fairly within the rules of netball.
