Seasons and Weather

Throughout Year 1 the children will be exploring the seasons and weather. We will observe and record the weather on different days and create timelines to help us understand how weather changes throughout the year. We will describe and compare the weather in spring, summer, autumn and winter, developing our skills as young scientists through observation and discussion.

Everyday Materials

Year 1 will also become materials detectives as we explore the different materials used in everyday objects. We will identify, sort and classify materials and investigate their different properties. Through practical activities, we will discover how materials can be used for different purposes and learn to explain what makes them suitable for particular objects.

Art & Design

This half term, Year 1 will be learning about the famous artist J.M.W. Turner. We will explore his beautiful landscapes and seascapes, discovering how he used light, colour and movement to bring his paintings to life. Through looking closely at his artwork and creating our own masterpieces, we will develop our artistic skills and use our imaginations to create dramatic and inspiring pictures inspired by Turner’s work.

Religious Education

Year 1 will be exploring Creation and Covenant. We will learn about the story of Creation and discover what it means to believe that God is the Creator of the world. Through stories, discussion and creative activities, we will reflect on the beauty of God’s creation and explore ways that we can care for our environment. We will also think about the important lessons found in Genesis 1 and how we can play our part in looking after our wonderful world.

Writing

This term, Year 1 will be enjoying Beegu by Alexis Deacon, a heartwarming story about friendship, belonging and kindness. The children will explore the character of Beegu, sequence key events from the story, create posters, and write informal letters. They will also develop their sentence-writing skills by using capital letters and full stops correctly, building confidence as young writers.

Geography

This term in Geography, the children will develop their map skills by exploring a range of maps, including globes and flat maps. They will learn to name and locate the seven continents and five oceans of the world, as well as identify the four countries that make up the United Kingdom, helping them to build a strong understanding of the world around them.

Maths

This term in Maths, the children will build their understanding of numbers to 10. They will sort objects into groups, practise reading and writing numbers, count forwards and backwards within 10, and learn to order and compare numbers. Through practical activities and investigations, the children will develop confidence and fluency with early number skills.

Physical Education

PE is on Monday.
This term, the children will develop their ball skills through a range of fun sending and receiving activities. They will practise rolling, throwing underarm and catching, helping to improve their coordination, control and confidence when working individually and with others.
