Mathematics
At Holy Family, we aim to deliver a high-quality mathematics education that fosters curiosity and promotes a love of maths. Our approach ensures that children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, develop the ability to solve problems, reason logically, make connections and work systematically and accurately. We equip all children with the skills they need to flourish in the real world.
Mathematics is taught daily across all year groups using White Rose Maths resources, with Numberblocks supporting learning in EYFS. Lessons are broken down into small, manageable steps, and interventions are quickly implemented to ensure no child falls behind. Daily ‘simmering’ activities allow children to practise and consolidate previously taught skills, while Mastering Number in Key Stage 1 develops fluency in number facts. Manipulatives are used to support understanding, and learning continues at home through Times Table Rock Stars and Maths Shed. Working walls provide key information, vocabulary and modelled examples to reinforce learning.
Through this approach, pupils leave Holy Family with a clear understanding of the importance of maths in everyday life. They can fluently recall number facts and times tables, make connections between mathematical concepts, reason mathematically and explain their thinking. Our curriculum develops resilience and confidence, enabling children to tackle problems independently and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.
White Rose
At Holy Family, we use White Rose Maths across the school to provide a clear, structured approach to teaching mathematics. Lessons are broken into small, manageable steps to build fluency and understanding, with opportunities to reason, problem-solve and make connections. This approach supports all learners and ensures that every child can develop confidence and enjoyment in maths.
Ready to Progress
At Holy Family, we use the Ready to Progress materials to provide additional support for pupils who need extra help in maths. These resources identify key gaps in learning and offer targeted activities to consolidate understanding, ensuring that all children can keep up with the curriculum and make confident progress.
Rekenreks
In Key Stage 1, we use Rekenreks to develop pupils’ understanding of number bonds, addition and subtraction. These visual tools help children build number sense, develop mental strategies, and gain confidence with numbers, supporting fluency and mastery in mathematics.
Times Tables
Times tables are part of daily classroom life from the very beginning. Regular practice helps pupils develop fluency in multiplication and division, supporting mental arithmetic and everyday calculations, not just preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Check.
